John Richardson’s Journal
Wonder · Mage
Arete 5, Quintessence 30, Not Available for Purchase
The lands of the north are hard. The brutal cold demands preparation and ingenuity to survive. Where
other members of Franklin’s party had resorted to eating lichen, rotten carcasses abandoned by wolves, and lightly boiled boots, Richardson found a different solution; he told Franklin he was too weak to continue and made camp with a naval cadet and a fellow Scotsman named Hepburn. Three weeks later, Richardson and Hepburn arrived at Fort Enterprise, hale and healthy, leaving five corpses behind them — at least one of which they had feasted upon.
They claimed that an Iroquois voyageur murdered the cadet and four others, then fed them human flesh. Some claim Richardson is a murderer, others a hero, but whatever really happened is a secret shared between Richardson and Hepburn.
System
The journal uses a Life 2, Prime 2 Effect to heal the user. This requires an activation roll and costs 1 Quintessence, which can come from the book or the user. This heals bashing and lethal damage as on the Base Damage or Duration chart (Mage 20, p. 504) as if the user rolled one more success than they did on their activation roll. Additionally, the user can spend one Quintessence point per health level to heal aggravated damage, or one Quintessence point per two health levels to heal bashing or lethal damage. The journal also has a Life 3, Prime 2 Effect which operates the same way, but to heal other beings. Lastly, it has a Prime 5 Effect, allowing its user to drain Quintessence from other beings to replenish the journal’s Quintessence. The journal’s healing Effects are uncanny, and its Quintessence draining is catastrophic.
